Gorilla, Soft Pastel on Wallis Paper, 12x18, 2006. For this piece, I'm using 12x18 Wallis sanded paper. The texture is like very fine sandpaper, and this allows the pastel to adhere to the paper in multiple layers.

Here, I've started to block in the lights and dark values in this piece. The pastels applied so far are Rembrandt sticks. I've also blocked in a few rough wrinkles using CarbOthello pastel pencils.

I've also added enough pastel at this point to completely cover the areas that I'm smoothing.

For the solid black, I am using a charcoal stick, which gives a deep velvety black on the actual painting, and is actually much blacker than any pastel stick.

At this stage, I've used pastel pencils almost exclusively, and have defined all of the wrinkles and hairs and other details of the face using pastel pencils.
