Zoom in!

Here, I've laid in the basic undercolors in the rocks that will end up as a subtle tint in the final painting. I've also created very defined eyes, as the eyes will be the focal point and will define the rest of the painting.

The undercolor for the black and the rocks consists of french ultramarine and indian red.

Here, I've laid in the base color of the rocks and the fur. This is close to the final color that the painting will be. At this point, the entire canvas is now covered.

I've used a mix of burnt umber, french ultramarine, and zinc white for the base color of the fur and rocks.

Here, fur is added by making short strokes with a filbert brush. I work from the rear of the cat towards the front, to create the effect of layers of fur.

Here, I continue to define the cat and the rocks. I used a stiff brush and a watered down mix of paint and splattered paint on the rocks, to create extra texture.

This is the final painting. I've darkened the edges of the painting to draw attention to the cat and continued to refine various areas. I've also added whiskers to the final cat.
